Japanese airlines cancelled around 100 domestic flights on Thursday, as a severe tropical storm approaches Okinawa in the southwest of the country.

Most of the flights were scheduled to depart from or arrive at airports on the islands of Ishigaki and Miyako in Okinawa.

The airlines have also decided to cancel around 140 flights on Friday. Most of the flights were scheduled to leave or arrive at Naha Airport on the Okinawa main island.

The airlines say more cancellations may be expected depending on a path of Severe Tropical Storm Mekkhala. They are asking customers to check their websites for the latest information.
