KAMPALA — Two former commanders of Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), retired Maj Gen Abel Kandiho and retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura, have reportedly been arrested as investigations into alleged false intelligence and security-related offences widen.
The two senior officers were reportedly picked up on September 9, 2026, according to military sources cited by local media. Their arrests come less than three weeks after they were among 19 senior Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers who retired from active service on August 20.
Their detention brings to four the number of senior military intelligence officers reported to have been arrested in connection with investigations into alleged production of false intelligence reports.
Kandiho served as CMI chief from January 2017, having been appointed while holding the rank of Colonel. He was later promoted to Brigadier General and subsequently Major General.
Bakahumura, meanwhile, headed CMI from 2012 to 2017 before moving to the Chieftaincy of Logistics and Engineering, where he served for seven years.
The latest arrests reportedly form part of an inquiry said to have been sanctioned by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Other senior intelligence officers previously linked to the investigations include former DIS chief Maj Gen James Birungi, Director of Counter-Terrorism Col Peter Ahimbisibwe and Director of Special Operations Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga.
Birungi and Byaruhanga have reportedly been charged with treachery before the General Court Martial and remanded to Makindye Military Police Barracks.
The allegations against the officers have not been established in court, while the UPDF had not issued an official statement confirming the latest arrests by the time of publication.
