KAMPALA — The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) is at the centre of the Government’s ongoing food relief intervention in the Karamoja sub-region, with more than 9.4 million kilograms of maize flour and dry beans delivered to vulnerable communities across nine districts.
The latest figures released by the Office of the Prime Minister show that 9,419,610 kilograms of food have been delivered under the Government relief programme, covering hundreds of parishes and more than 300,000 households.
The intervention, which is part of Government efforts to support vulnerable communities in Karamoja, has seen 6,279,740 kilograms of maize flour and 3,139,870 kilograms of dry beans distributed.
According to the figures, the full planned quantities have been delivered, representing 100 percent fulfilment of the targeted food allocation.
313,987 households reached
The relief programme has so far covered 9 districts and 480 parishes, reaching an estimated 313,987 households across Karamoja.
The scale of the distribution underscores the Government’s continued focus on addressing food insecurity and supporting communities facing humanitarian and livelihood challenges in the sub-region.
NEC, the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has continued to play a role in Government interventions aimed at strengthening production, logistics and delivery of essential supplies to communities.
The corporation’s involvement in national development programmes comes as Government intensifies efforts to use public institutions and strategic agencies to support vulnerable populations while strengthening local production and supply chains.
Maize flour and beans form bulk of relief
The food consignment comprises two major staples — maize flour and dry beans.
Maize flour: 6,279,740kg

The quantities indicate the significant logistical undertaking involved in moving and distributing food supplies across Karamoja’s nine districts and 480 parishes.
For communities receiving the supplies, the intervention provides immediate food support while Government continues pursuing longer-term measures aimed at improving household resilience and livelihoods.
Government relief effort
The latest distribution demonstrates the scale of resources being deployed by Government to respond to food needs in Karamoja.
With more than 9.4 million kilograms already delivered, the programme represents one of the major ongoing Government relief efforts targeting vulnerable households in the region.
The intervention also highlights the importance of coordinated action among Government institutions, including the Office of the Prime Minister and NEC, in ensuring that relief supplies are moved from procurement and storage points to communities in need.
