Wagagai dominates Mineral Wealth Awards as Uganda turns spotlight on value addition, safety and responsible mining

KAMPALA — Wagagai Mining Company Uganda Ltd has emerged as the biggest name at Uganda’s 15th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference, walking away with the prestigious Mining Company of the Year Award as the two-day gathering closed at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Wagagai’s victory came after a conference that placed Uganda’s vast mineral wealth under intense scrutiny, with government, investors and mining industry players debating how the country can transform its underground resources into factories, jobs, exports and wider economic growth.

The company also finished runner-up in the Workplace Health and Safety Award and Responsible Mining and Environmental Stewardship Award, giving it a strong showing across three major categories.

Sinno Mineral Investment Co. Ltd was named runner-up for Mining Company of the Year.

Other companies also took centre stage. Tembo Steels won the Innovation and Value Addition Award, while H5 Resources Ltd emerged winner in Responsible Mining and Environmental Stewardship.

Namekara Mining Company Ltd won the Workplace Health and Safety Award, while Yaobai Cement was crowned winner of the Community Impact and Local Content Award.

The awards capped two days of discussions under the theme “Beneath the Surface: Unlocking Africa’s Next Mining Powerhouse.”

A major message from the conference was Uganda’s need to stop relying on the export of raw minerals and capture more value locally through beneficiation, refining, processing and manufacturing.

Participants also tackled the financing of mining projects, formalisation of artisanal and small-scale miners, environmental protection, technology, regulation and increased participation of Ugandan businesses in the mineral value chain.

The conference brought together government officials, mining companies, investors, financiers and other industry stakeholders, with exhibitions and business engagements providing a platform for potential investment partnerships.

For Uganda, however, the real test now moves beyond the conference halls.

The question is whether the ideas and investment conversations generated at Munyonyo will translate into mines, processing plants, manufacturing industries, jobs and greater value from Uganda’s mineral wealth.
