Mbarara, Uganda — Ntare School on Saturday celebrated one of its distinguished sons, Lt Gen James Mugira, Managing Director of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his outstanding service to Uganda and his contribution to national development during the school’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
The colourful ceremony, held at the historic institution in Mbarara City, brought together government officials, alumni, students and invited guests to commemorate seven decades of Ntare School’s legacy as one of Uganda’s leading centres of excellence.
The event was presided over by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, himself an Old Boy of Ntare School. In her remarks, the Vice President hailed the school’s enduring contribution to producing leaders who have shaped Uganda’s political, military, business and academic landscape over the years.
Lt Gen Mugira’s recognition underscored Ntare School’s tradition of celebrating alumni who have made significant contributions to the country. Over the years, the decorated military officer has played a central role in advancing Uganda’s defence and industrial capabilities through his leadership at NEC, the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The celebrations also marked a significant milestone in the school’s history with the launch of a commemorative book titled “Legacy of the Lion: Ntare School Since 1956, a publication documenting the institution’s rich heritage, achievements and influence since its founding seven decades ago.
Speaking during the launch, Vice President Alupo described the publication as a valuable historical record that captures the spirit of excellence, patriotism and leadership that Ntare School has cultivated across generations of students.
Among the highlights of the commemorative book is a historic photograph featured on its front cover, depicting members of the Ntare School Higher School Certificate Class of 1982. The image brings together some of the school’s notable alumni, including the late Brig. Noble Mayombo, Lt Gen James Mugira, the late Lt Col Hannington Kakura, Col. Sam Bainomugisha Mugyenyi and Mr. Joseph Rwanshote during their days as students.
The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Ntare School’s longstanding role in nurturing leaders who have gone on to serve the nation in various capacities.
Lt Gen Mugira attended the celebrations alongside Maj. Gen. Sabiti Muzeeyi, General Manager of Luwero Industries Limited, a subsidiary of NEC, who is also an alumnus of the prestigious school.
Their presence highlighted the continued bond between Ntare School and its old boys, many of whom occupy influential positions within Uganda and beyond.
Founded in 1956, Ntare School has earned a reputation for academic excellence and leadership development, producing generations of distinguished Ugandans, including presidents, cabinet ministers, military officers, diplomats and business leaders.
As the institution marks its platinum milestone, the recognition of alumni such as Lt Gen Mugira reflects not only a celebration of individual achievement but also the enduring legacy of a school whose motto continues to inspire generations: “The Lion Roars.”
Seventy years on, Ntare School’s story remains intertwined with Uganda’s own journey—a testament to the transformative power of education and the lasting impact of institutions that invest in character, service and leadership.
